Jackson on the Market

Perhaps the best free agent in the NFL this offseason is on the market and wants to start.

Steven Jackson, who has spent his entire career with the St. Louis Rams, voided his contract with the team on Thursday and is now an unrestricted free agent. Despite going into his 10th season, Jackson is only 29 years old and still wants to be a starter in the NFL.

Jackson is one of the most underrated running backs in recent history. In his 9-year career, he has rushed for 10,315 yards and 56 touchdowns. On top of that, he is a three-time Pro-Bowler and has managed to rush for more than 1,000 yards in each of the past eight seasons. Only three players in the history of the NFL have had longer consecutive 1,000-yard seasons: Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin, and Barry Sanders. All three are currently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

So why hasn’t Jackson received his deserved praise? That would be because he has spent his entire St. Louis Rams. In the years that Jackson has spent with the Rams, which would be 2004 through 2013, the Rams never achieved a winning recorded and eclipsed the 6-win mark only 4 times in the last 9 years. An absolute monster in the backfield has been hidden for years as a result of the Rams’ recent run of irrelevancy. Now that Jackson has voided his contract, he has the opportunity to go to a winning team and actually contribute to a playoff run. Best of luck to Steven Jackson, who I believe is a Hall of Famer in the making.
