Hot Rays, slumping attendance

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball.  But even though they're winning, home attendance is down 14.6 percent.

So far this year, the Rays are averaging about 17,000 a game.  Only two teams have suffered bigger declines, the Houston Astros and the Miami Marlins.

They're down a whopping 39 percent.

Surprisingly, the average Major League Baseball team is drawing 3.5 percent fewer fans this season.  Even the New York Yankees have seen a slump in attendance.  League officials blame cold, ugly weather that has carried over into the spring.
